Paula Michele Wagoner is an artist, writer, and designer, and a native of Sanibel Island. She received a scholarship from Robert Rauschenberg through BIG ARTS of Sanibel Island and trained at The School of the MFA in Boston, Massachusetts. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing from UNCA and a Master’s degree in Literature and Professional Writing from WCU in Western North Carolina. She is a published writer on artists in the region and works professionally as a designer for Broken Shell Studios in Naples. She is a former English Teacher and her studies in mythology influence her love for blending mythos and ecology from the area.
Specifically in my current series, the mermaid and shell paintings on display represent the blending of beauty and strength as found in the shells we collect in Southwest Florida. The mermaid painting, “Sanibel Mermaid: Collection After the Storm,” includes items that were lost or found after Hurricane Ian; one piece is a Calusa sculpture of a Florida panther, another piece is a mermaid statue, washed away from house of Anna Sampas on West Gulf Drive, along with her entire first floor. Twenty percent of the sale of this painting will go to support F.I.S.H. of SanCap, whose mission is to enrich the lives of all people in Sanibel and Captiva Islands by neighbors helping neighbors with social services, education and assistance.
I chose this quote because as a writer, I feel that every piece of my writing will eventually help me find my truest voice and personal style, no matter how small the undertaking is. Through the interviews with authors, artists, composers, health and other journalistic pieces, creative non-fiction and fictional prose, and poetry, my style continues to become parts of a whole that make up my story. —Paula Michele Wagoner
